Empowering down the ranks is empowering up the ranks, as many-time global CEO Michael de José points out. Now is the worst time to be lonely at the top. Enlist the problem-solving of all our people, especially those closest to the ground, who experience first hand the challenges and opportunities of our workforce, customers, partners, the overall market. The temptation to rely on top-down mandates will severely limit and slow down business.
Test empowerment at the level of specific individuals up and down the ranks – so everyone is able to apply it in practice. Establish concrete mechanisms to operationalize through Empowerment Practices x Frequency x Adoption by enough people in our organization.
Break down the bigger problems into smaller battles and celebrate the wins. We are not going to restart or normalize in a day. Reset expectations and set winnable milestones.
Reframe your narrative and draw from proven stories and histories. Model hope, reversal, growth. It is not true that we have not been here before. WW1, WW2. Closer to home and closer to our times, Coach Tab points to these kinds of disruptions happening everyday in the world of sports. Athletes suffer injuries; many have to shelter at home, locked down and immobile for weeks and months; rehab is slow, painful, uneven, and unpredictable full of anxiety and stress physically, mentally, emotionally. But many athletes are able to rise above, restart and get back to even better versions of themselves, many times emphasizing a broader diversity of strengths because of their disruptive injuries.
Empowerment also depends in employees feeling supported as human beings; financially; in terms of business continuity; their mental health, as both Marvin and Don point out by way of exemplifying the response in their own organizations.
Put another way, this is a golden opportunity for HR practitioners and service providers to level up their business impact as a strategic partner of CEO/management to drive empowerment of talent, teams and peak performance in the New Normal.
